Modern sampling and mixing started with comedy duo Buchanan & Goodman. When they made their first cut-in (also called break-in) record “The Flying Saucer” in 1956, they used seventeen different samples from popular music of the time mixed with their own commentary, creating a conversation between a news reporter (always John Cameron Cameron) and the samples were the answers to his questions. They were sued for almost every sample, but the judges ruled that the record was considered a new work and to be satire. They then followed up the lawsuits with a cut-in record called “Buchanan & Goodman on Trial”. “Mr. Jaws”, in 1975, was their biggest hit since “The Flying Saucer”, as with all of their work , shows off the top hits of the era.
