They hit on something really true and hilarious about fame and performers with the film, This is Spinal Tap. Being over thirty years old, the movie really holds up. This comedy band’s core performers are David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls and Nigel Tufnel, played by the actors Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer. There have been a lot of great mockumentaries over the years, many involving these same performers, but this one is just the best.
These men have created amazing characters over the years. Michael McKean played Lenny on Laverne & Shirley, and has had tons of movie and TV work including Clue, The X-Files, and A Mighty Wind; Christopher Guest was the six-fingered man in The Princes Bride and is the writer/director of a slew of similar mockumentaries; and Harry Shearer was an early writer and performer on Saturday Night Live and on The Simpsons provided the voices of Mr. Burns, Principal Skinner, Ned Flanders, Waylon Smithers, Reverend Lovejoy, Dr. Hibbert, Kent Brockman, and many others.
This song is the title track from 2009’s Back from the Dead album. Originally released in 2000, this track was one of the more heralded from the album, as most of it was re-recorded versions of older songs. In one sense, that is true to the band’s parodying of real rock bands, as many long running bands have released inferior re-recordings of earlier works.
