Bessie Smith was the most popular female blues singer in the 20’s and 30’s. Billie Holiday names her as a major influence. “Haunted House Blues” was recorded in the early 20’s and was written by J. C. Johnson. Bessie Smith died in a car accident on September 26 1937. This was tragic, as she had made some new recordings and was set to make a comeback after her popularity had waned.
