Song # 30: Up Jumped The Devil (Nick Cave Cover)

Both of the other songs I made this year have effects manipulating the sound of the music and singing, so for this one, I wanted it to be completely raw, no effects what so ever. It is just my voice and guitar. This is a cover of the song from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ Tender Prey album. One of my favorite qualities of Nick Cave is the way he adopts different personas to tell song-stories. The narrator of this song is not a good man; due to a tragic origin, he is destined to be damned. There is a real old west feel to the time period it takes place in, with the references to “hitching post” and the “gallow tree.” I was happy that the new arrangement is so different from the original but still retained the dark sentiment.
